A western in home newborn session was easy to plan for the former Miss Reno Rodeo and Miss Rodeo Nevada, Ashley Espin. Ashley and Will have built a life rooted in hard work, family, and the western way of living. Their home, tucked into the Nevada landscape, is more than a house—it’s a place where tiny cowboy boots line the entryway, where the morning light spills across the floor, and where love is felt in the simplest of moments. It was the perfect setting to document this new chapter of their story. We spent the morning capturing their life as it is—bare feet, the boys fighting on the bed, rocking chairs swaying gently on the porch, and moments of stillness between the wildness of raising their perfect 3 boys. I am so beyond honored I was able to capture these beautiful newborn moments for one of my favorite families.
An in-home session is one of the most meaningful ways to capture your family’s story. It allows for a relaxed, intimate setting where everyone feels comfortable, especially with little ones in the mix. Whether you’re planning your own session or looking for ways to make the most of your experience, here are some valuable tips to ensure your photos turn out beautifully.
Natural light is key for in-home photography. Mid-morning or late afternoon often provides the best lighting, especially if your home has big windows that let in that soft, golden glow. Before your session, take note of when the light fills your favorite rooms and plan accordingly.
You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect home to have a stunning in-home session. A little tidying up can help minimize distractions, but don’t stress about making everything spotless. A home that feels warm, cozy, and lived in makes for the most authentic photos. Focus on clearing clutter in the main areas where you’ll be photographed, like the bedroom, living room, or nursery.
Since you’re at home, keep outfits soft, cozy, and true to your style. Neutral tones, soft textures, and earth-toned colors tend to photograph beautifully in natural light. Avoid loud patterns or bright neon colors, as they can distract from the intimate feel of the session. And don’t forget—bare feet, cozy sweaters, and flowing dresses always add a touch of effortless charm!
If you have little ones, know that the best moments happen in between the posed ones. Let them play, explore, and be themselves. Some of the sweetest photos come from unplanned giggles, sibling cuddles, and quiet moments of connection. I’ll gently guide you into natural interactions, so there’s no pressure to force anything.
The beauty of an in-home session is that it tells your story. Including sentimental details—like a favorite rocking chair, a quilt passed down through generations, or a family pet—adds an extra layer of meaning to your photos. Whether it’s a well-loved cowboy hat on the coat rack or baby boots on the shelf, these small details help paint a fuller picture of your life at this moment.
For newborn sessions, I recommend scheduling within the first two weeks of your baby’s arrival, when they’re still in that sleepy, curled-up stage. But if you prefer to wait a little longer until you’re more settled, that’s perfectly okay too! The goal is to document this season in a way that feels right for you.
The best thing you can do for your session? Let go of any expectations and simply be present with your family. These photos aren’t about perfection—they’re about capturing the love, laughter, and fleeting moments that make your home and your family so special.
